Issue #3 - Pitching Advice from Pros
Hey Writers!
Let’s start this week’s newsletter out with a bit of good news from @astridtaran on Twitter.
Say whaaaaaaaaat?
If you’re pitching your guts out and don’t manage to land a gig immediately—don’t worry. If it seems like a fit, editors still keep you in mind for future gigs. Woo hoo!
But, how do you go about crafting a good pitch—one that won’t immediately land your email in the trash?
The answer is: it depends.
Every publication/editor has different pitching requirements. The best thing you can do is read the publication’s guidelines with a giant magnifying glass and scour past articles before you pitch.
While there isn’t one cookie-cutter method that will work for every publication, there are some general do’s and don’ts that will help you write better pitches.
I like this advice from Internet Person on Twitter (give him a follow).
Here’s the link to the Freelancing With Tim article and the niemanlab article referenced above.
I found these resources helpful and hope you will too!
If you have no idea where to start when crafting a pitch, here are two cold pitching templates that will help you get started. But again, the best thing to do is follow the publication’s guidelines exactly.
Thanks!
-Ashley
